“Artisanal” Shed

My wife and I have about 8 chickens, depending on how lucky the local foxes and hawks are. We needed a space to put all of their food, wood chips, and various other yard tools. We needed a shed. Rather than just buying a shed from a local hardware store, I decided it would be “easier” to build one myself. I also thought it would take me a weekend. After 9 months, it was finally completed.

The design was original, but of course, it borrows from established framing techniques. My good friend, Doug Paulson, provided a lot of support. Midway through the project, we became inspired by the classroom spaces at Socrates Sculpture Park in NYC, where Doug taught classes. We did our best to copy that style on a budget. It was fun.

Completed roof installation. Roof was clear corrugated plastic, which allows for natural light.
