The nature of being an experimentalist is that every project is part science (i.e. something novel) combined with a lot of good engineering (i.e. something familiar). I might be trying to build a new type of waveguide, but the optimization techniques that I use to maximize coupling is the same as those employed in industry. At the end of the day, regardless of where you are, it has to work.
